Derrick Thompson enters his second season as head men’s and women’s golf coach at Iowa Western. In addition to his Coaching duties, he also serves as coordinator for the annual Reiver Golf Scholarship Scramble.
The Reivers saw much success on the course during Thompson's first year. In total, the men's and women's teams earned 7 tournament championships and 8 individual tournament titles. The women's team won their 7th straight NJCAA Region XI Championship and again earned a trip to the NJCAA National Championship where they finished 8th. The men finished 3rd at the NJCAA District III Championship and also qualified for the NJCAA National Championship where they finished 15th. The Reivers also had 3 freshman named All-American. For the women, Damla Bilgic earned NJCAA All-American honors with her 13th place finish at the National Championship. On the men's side, Ross Martens and Alister Balcombe were both named GCAA All-American and Balcombe was also named to the NJCAA All-Freshman Team.
Derrick comes to Iowa Western after serving in the same capacity with North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho from 2010 to 2014. In each of his 4 years leading the Cardinals, both the Men’s and Women’s teams qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament. He also helmed 3 teams that were named NJCAA All Academic. Individually, Coach Thompson coached Angus Montgomery, the 2014 Phil Mickelson Award winner as the NJCAA’s most outstanding freshman, as well as 2 NJCAA All-Americans and 2 GCAA All-Americans.
Thompson is passionate about the game of golf and has worked in the industry for 10 years. He has been a golf professional since 2006 and worked at the nationally-acclaimed Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course as an assistant professional from 2006 to 2007. He then worked at Avondale Golf and Tennis Club in Hayden Lake, Idaho as a PGA professional until coming to Council Bluffs. Thompson is also a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and a voting member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Golfweek Coaches Poll.
Thompson graduated from Ferndale High School in Washington in 2000 and attended Western Washington University in Bellingham. He and his wife Melissa have two children, a son and daughter, Grady and Camryn.
Matt Robinson enters his second season as Assistant Men’s and Women’s golf coach at Iowa Western. Along with his coaching duties he helps support the annual Reiver Golf Scholarship Fundraiser that helps raise thousands of dollars for Scholarships.
Matt comes to Iowa Western while also helping serve as the Head/Assistant Girl’s golf coach at Treynor Community School located in Treynor, IA. From 2013 until 2016 he helped compile a 94-11 record. In his 4 years coaching at Treynor his 2016 team was the State Runner-Up (Class 2A) and in 2015 they received an 8th place finish at the State Tournament. His teams won the Regular Season and Conference Championships in 2014, 2015 & 2016 while setting the record for largest margin of victory in 2016 (80 strokes), and was Regional Champions in 2014 & 2015. His 2014 and 2015 teams achieved a State ranking of 4th place while in 2016 they ended the season ranked 2nd by IAHSGCA.
He coach Aly Anderson to the Individual State Championship Honors (Class 2A) as well as Player of the Year in the State of Iowa (2A) in 2016. His teams consisted of 13 players achieving All-District Player honors, 6 players received All-State honors, and 2 earned Academic All-State honors. Matt was voted Coach of the Year in the State of Iowa, District 2 in 2014 and 2015. Along with his team setting numerous school records, Matt helped establish one of the best Southwest Iowa Girls golf teams.
Robinson has worked in some capacity of the golf industry over the past 6 years. His strengths are the ability to help the players with the mental aspects of the game as well as being able to connect and form a long lasting relationship with the players to help prepare them for what to expect after they graduate and move on in life.
Robinson graduated from Fremont High School in Fremont, NE and obtained his BA from Midland University where he also participated in Football and Basketball. He and his wife (Staci) have 2 children; a son, Trey who is a Sophomore at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, IA and participates in Basketball and Baseball and a daughter, Randi, who is a Senior at Treynor High School that participates in Volleyball, Basketball, Golf and Softball.
