The Reivers competed in the NJCAA Cross Country National Championship on Saturday. The meet was held in El Dorado Kansas and Iowa Western competed very well. The men’s and women’s team each finished in 14th place out of the 40 team fields.

Shanieke Watson led the women with an 8th place finish in a time of 18:15. Her 8th place finish gave her an NJCAA Second Team All-American honor. Ariat Olok was the second Reiver across the line in 60th place with a time of 19:48 and was followed by Taylor Valentine in 91st place with a time 20:15. Purity Chebet broke 21 minutes as well with 142nd place finish in 20:51. Paige Baier (187th place, 21:34), Jamie Goblirsch (208th place, 21:55), and Hayley Wagner (235th place, 22:24) rounded out the Reivers top 7 at the national meet. It was one of the deepest, most competitive women’s field in recent history as 315 runners competed.

The men who were ranked 20th going into the meet were led by Fabian Garcia. His breakout race landed him 35th place in a huge personal record of 26:15. Bill Oyet also ran his best time of the season at the championship as he broke 27 minutes for the first time. Oyet finished in 57th place with a time 26:52. Vincent Lalang was the third reiver across the line in 92nd place with a time 27:21 and Herick Walters was not far behind him in 121st place with a time of 27:50. This marked the first time Walters broke 28 minutes on the season. Lynn Sermons (149th place, 28:11), Chaz Berry (185th place, 28:38), and Blake Schaben (203rd place, 28:58) finished off the top seven and boasted the depth the men’s team has relied on this year.

Both the men and women outperformed their rankings going into the meet and came away with some huge personal bests on the year, a great way to finish the season.

The Reivers will head to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the NJCAA Half-Marathon Championship next weekend.
