Reivers Defeat #4 Monroe CC in 2OT

Rochester, NY- #7 ranked Reivers upset #4 Tribunes of Monroe CC 1-0 in a 2OT thriller to improve to 4-0 on the year. The match was an open attacking affair as both teams created quality chances to win the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The match was a tense one on both ends from the opening whistle. Monroe quickly established possession creating chances through strong play from Greek internacional Eleni Markou in the midfield, but the Reivers countered through great transition play through forward Eva Castaño. After a scoreless first half which saw both teams threaten goal, Monroe CC thought they had the break through when the earned a penalty kick in the 65' minute. However, sophomore GK Becca Jenson smartly dove to her right and saved the well struck Tribune attempt and cleaned up the rebound. The Reivers' best chance to win the match came in the 87' when freshman center midfielder Sara Paez caught Monroe GK, Caity Broderick, off her line. Paez shot from 45 yards out, but Broderick recovered well and used all of her 5'10" frame to parry Paez's well placed shot over the crossbar.

The game turned to overtime and both teams searched for a winner as space began to open up in the midfield. The deciding moment came off a free kick from the center of the field 45 yards from goal. Defender Cristina Moreno chipped a teasing ball in to the six yard box which sophomore Maria Guzman ran on to getting just enough on it to beat a diving Broderick.

NOTES & NUMBERS: The Reivers improve to 4-0 on the year. Guzman's goal marks her first career match winner. Reivers remain undefeated (2-0-2) in overtime under Head Coach Adam Sanchez, both wins ended with a set piece.

QUOTES: "The team responded perfectly to the challenge today and put together a complete performance. They attacked intelligently, were organized defensively, and stayed composed in critical moments of the match." Sanchez commented after the match. "It was a performance that they should be very proud of and hopefully it will be a performance we can build on."
