Reivers Take Down Defending National Champions 4-0
Fort Dodge, IA-The Reivers improved to 4-0 in conference play by defeating #4 Iowa Central CC 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops the Tritons to 2-2 in the ICCAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Iowa Western dominated the opening half, but couldn't find the breakthrough until the 28th minute when sophomore captain Amelia Fullmer found freshman midfielder Sara Paez with a yard of space on 20 yards from goal. Paez fainted right and turned to her left to create enough space to fire off a shot that found the lower left corner of the Tritan net.
Fullmer turned finisher for the Reiver's second goal of the half. She collected a pass from freshman Alex Allgaier who evaded a couple of Triton defenders to find Fullmer open on the left side of the 18. Fullmer took a touch and smashed it in to the upper left corner leaving the ICCC goalkeeper no chance.
After the break, the Reivers looked even more dangerous. After several stellar saves by the Triton goalkeeper, Paez found the back of the net once again, this time from 35 yards out. Sophomore central defender Cristina Moreno finished off the scoring from the PK spot after great team interplay which culminated with Maria Guzman drawing a foul in the penalty box.
QUOTES: Coach Adam Sanchez: "The team responded really well after losing our last match. I felt our performance was fantastic, especially in the 2nd half. We created a lot of quality chances in the 2nd period. Their (ICCC) goalkeeper was outstanding and several of her saves were right out of the top drawer." Sanchez continued, "To do what we just did, completing 4 games in 7 days, 3 on the road and nearly 5,000 miles covered, beating a conference opponent and defending national champion at their place, says a lot about our group. This was the toughest stretch of the season and the team was fantastic. We still anticipate tough games within conference, but we are now able to prepare adequately for each opponent."
NOTES AND NUMBERS: The Reivers improve to 4-0 in conference and 1st place in the ICCAC. Iowa Western's 4 goals exceeded all the goals that were conceded in the programs' 3 matches last year combined.
