Iowa Western Earns a Trip to NJCAA National Tournament

Des Moines, IA –Iowa Western Women’s Soccer won the Region XI and District K Championship on Sunday, October 30th to earn a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament in Melbourne, Florida. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  The Reivers faced Iowa Lakes Community College in a semi-final match on Saturday, October 29th.  Sophomore forward, Eva Castaño found the back of the net in the 9th minute off of a pass from fellow Spaniard, Cristina Moreno, to give the Reivers a 1-0 lead. In the 17th minute, the Reivers struck again.  Utah native, Amelia Fullmer, scored off of a cross into the box from Samantha Guadarrama.  The Reivers led 2-0 at halftime.  In the 50th minute Fullmer found the back of the net again on a ball from Colombian, Sara Paez, to give the Reivers a comfortable 3-0 lead for the remainder of the match.  Indian Hills Community College won the other semi-final match over Scott Community College to earn a spot in the final. 

On Sunday, October 30th the Reivers took on 17th ranked Indian Hills Community College in the Region XI and District K Final.  Iowa Western scored a beautiful goal in the 17th minute when Kate Reddish beat a defender and played a perfect ball into the box for Eva Castaño to one touch upper 90 past the IHCC goalkeeper.  The Reivers had a 1-0 lead at halftime.  Indian Hills scored the equalizer in the 47th minute off of a corner kick.  The Reivers had several more opportunities to score in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. 

The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation and at the end of the first half of overtime.  Finally, in the 108th minute of the match Amelia Fullmer found the back of the net on a one touch finish on another Kate Reddish cross into the box.  Iowa Western won the final 2-1 becoming Region XI and District K champions and earning a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament! 

NOTES & NUMBERS: The Iowa Western Women’s Soccer team moves to 15-1-0 on the year with a perfect 14-0-0 record against conference opponents. 

UP NEXT:  The Reivers head to Melbourne, Florida for the NJCAA National Tournament along with 11 other junior college teams.  Iowa Western will most likely play pool play matches on Monday, November 14th and Wednesday, November 16th.  The top team from each of the four pools will move on to the semi-final matches on Friday, November 18th and then the championship match is on Saturday, November 19th.  All national tournament games will be streamed live at http://www.njcaatv.com  Please check www.goreivers.com and @ReiverWSoccer on Twitter for updates on games times and the tournament schedule.
