COUNCIL BLUFFS - Iowa Western Head Baseball Coach Ryan Cougill notched career victory number 500 with an 11-2 win over McHenry CC on Friday afternoon at Doc Ross Field.
The Reivers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Scots on an RBI single from Justin Rompré in the first inning. Starting Pitcher Cade Miller struck out three in his three-inning outing but got knocked around in the second, giving up a pair of runs on a 2-run single from Adam Wrzos to take a 2-1 lead.
Iowa Western (13-6) responded in the bottom half of the frame. A two-run single from Austin Selenke and a two-run triple from Rompré were part of a five-run inning to take a 6-2 lead.
Pitchers Brennan Miller and Creighton Tuzzio combined for seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits to McHenry (3-10) the rest of the way.
The Reivers would plate another run in the fifth inning on a solo shot from Martin Serrano that went 355 feet over the right field wall. Rompré would record his fourth RBI of the game on a double in the 6th, while a pinch-hit RBI single from Dane Most made it a nine-run lead for the home team.
Iowa Western would go on to win game two, 15-4, to sweep the day. The Reivers are back in action tomorrow at noon from Doc Ross Field. A reminder that all IWCC home games are streamed for FREE on the Reiver Sports Network. Any links asking for credit card information are spam.
