Reivers Walk-Off Bears; Take Two of Three in the Series
COUNCIL BLUFFS - An RBI single from Nolan Geislinger in the bottom of the 9th inning gave NJCAA DI No. 9 Iowa Western Baseball a 6-5 win over NJCAA DII Des Moines Area CC on Sunday afternoon.
Iowa Western (24-7) took game one on Saturday, 9-1. Freshman Justin Rompré hit a towering shot to left field that bounced off the roof of the Reiver Athletic Performance Center in left field for his 10th home run of the season.
Game two saw the Bears (13-18) claw their way back from being down 11-6 in the top of the 9th inning. DMACC plated five runs in the top half to tie the game at 11, then scored the go-ahead run in the 10th and sent the home team down 1-2-3 to win the game in extra innings.
Game three of the series also came down to the wire. The Reivers took a 4-1 lead into the 6th inning on a two-run shot from Austin Selenke and a solo shot that went 412 feet over the left center field wall from Nolan Geislinger. The Bears answered with two runs in the 6th on a 2-run double from Drake Obermueller and an RBI single from Trey Franck in the 7th to tie the game.
DMACC then scored the go-ahead run in the 8th after Drew Owen and Obermueller were both hit by Dylan Goltl. An infield single from Greyson Kirtsch loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly from Cole Baumgart gave the visitors a 5-4 lead.
Iowa Western answered in the bottom of the 8th with Kayden Anderson scoring on a wild pitch from third base to tie the game at five. Jaison Delamar worked a scoreless ninth, and that brought up Jayden Nakamura with one out. The third baseman was hit by a pitch and then promptly stole second after the Bears threw over to first with Nakamura running. A high throw gave Jayden the steal easily.
Geislinger came to bat with two outs and lined a single to right field; third base coach Miles Kizer waved Nakamura home. The throw from right was in time, and the tag from the catcher was good, but the home plate umpire ruled Nakamura safe to give Iowa Western a 6-5 win, much to the disagreement from DMACC head coach Nic Mishler.
The Reivers will head to Centerville, IA, on Wednesday for a two-game series with ICCAC Conference opponent Indian Hills and will be back at home starting on Friday for a three-game series with Dakota County Tech.
