Reiver Men Have a Good Showing in Hosted Event
The Reiver Men completed hosting their annual Fall tournament this past Monday and Tuesday at Bent Tree. The field was loaded, which had 5 teams ranked either in NJCAA DI or DII golf. The men hung in and finished in 2nd place. With the 'B' team finishing 3rd overall. Hutchinson CC, which is ranked 4th in the nation, came away with the victory.
Day 1 in round 1 the Men's 'A' team started off slow and fell behind early. This would be the difference in the overall finish. Rounds 2 and 3 the team hung neck and neck with Hutchinson. Team 'B' got off to a hot start and was leading late in the round, settling into 2nd place at the end. Sophomore Sam Wells led all players in round 1 with a round of -3 (69).
Round 2 that played later that day saw Team 'A' settle down and compete with Hutch. Only shooting 2 strokes worse and ending the day Tied for 3rd place. Freshman Ty Potter bounced back from round 1 and led all scores with a 2 under score of 70.
Round 3 was a good round for all Iowa Western golfers; 10 of the 13 players finished within 3 strokes of par. Sophomore Sam Wayman had the best round of even par 72 for Team 'B'. He rolled in a 4-foot put to secure a 3rd place finish with ranked Dodge City CC. Sophomores Ethan Main, Steven Gormely and Manny Jensen all shot 1 over 73. While Freshman Keaton Barnes matched their score. Sophomore Landen Van Verm was 1 stroke back with a 74 playing as an individual.
"Hosting can always be difficult for players," said Head Coach Matt Robinson. "Since it's your course you can try and go out and press it too hard to score well. I think that's what happened in round 1 but we settled down and played smart golf and competed well against some highly ranked teams."
The Reivers will have some time off until they compete in the Morningside Invite Oct 4th and 5th.
