Reivers Finish as Region 11 Runner-up; Break Multiple Records
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Iowa Western put forth a solid 2nd-place finish on the Men's and Women's side at the Region 11 Championships hosted by Buena Vista University.
Rajay Hemmings took the national lead by throwing a monster school record toss of 18.09m to break the facility record for the win. Arthur Leandro de Sousa threw(16.95m) to finish 2nd.
Shantay Augustine broke the facility record and school record in the 60m running, 7.46 to set a personal best and move to 6th in the nation. Mary Laha was 2nd with a personal best of 7.57 to move to 17th in the nation. Lyric Butcher completed the 60m sweep, running a personal best of 7.62 to move to 21st in the nation. Augustine won the 60m hurdles in 8.59, and Laha was 2nd in 8.95, followed by Nickiya Shields in 9.19. In the prelims, Shields ran a season's best 8.96 to qualify for nationals.
Pierre Carlier set a facility record to win the men's mile in 4:14.82. Mohamed Boutaguia finished 4th in 4:16.87, and Miguel Angel Lopez Carranza 6th in 4:21.68.
Juliana Sakat set the facility record and meet record in the mile to win with a 5:00.61. Hafssa Boutrich was 4th in 5:06.70, and Widjane Inzaline was 6th in 5:26.47.
Reivers swept the 1000m with Sakat in 3:04.71, Elizabeth Ewusie 2nd in 3:05.98, and Wijdane Inzaline 3rd in 3:06.35. In the 5000m, Sakat won another individual title in 16:57.88 to set a facility and meet record, followed by Elizabeth Ewusie in 17:41.14.
Taeja Bartee was a double event winner, setting a facility record in the long jump to win in 5.69m and the triple jump in 11.78m to win on her final attempt and move to 11th in the nation. Lyric Butcher was 4th in the long jump with a 5.53m, and Rosie Hadley 6th in 4.85m. Nickiya Shields finished 3rd in the triple jump in 11.39m, and Brooklyn Vomacka was 5th in 10.07m.
Miguel Angel Lopez Carranze won the 5000m in 15:36.83, followed by Holden Jensen in 15:50.49.
Wichieng Hosnyang won the men's high jump and qualified for nationals in 2.01m to move to 17th in the nation. Angel Lopez placed 3rd in 1.96m, followed by Khaliq King in 4th at 1.91m.
Yman Ossie Tchiengue led a sweep in the high jump, setting a facility record in 1.67m. Kahdijah Bailey was 2nd in 1.62m and Rasheda Samuels 3rd in 1.62m
Keone John won the 400m in 49.81, followed in 2nd by Joshua Perry with a 49.88. Aaron Masenge was 8th in a personal best of 51.34. John was also 5th in the 600m with a 1:24.18, followed by Lucas Nelson in 1:25.03. Nelson also finished 3rd in the 800m with a 2:00.49. Tate Brownsberger was 6th in 2:04.12, and Cody Dorscher was 8th in 2:04.94.
The Women's 4x800m of Hafssa Boutrich, Mya Curtis, Alyssa Kulesa, Elizabeth Ewusie was crowned champions in 10:32.32, while the Men's 4x800m of Landon Hartley, Luis Cordova, Jace Matern, Moustapha Tiea finished 2nd in 7:56.56.
Adam Dingley qualified for nationals in the 60m hurdles in a personal best of 8.16 to move to 17th in the nation and 9th in school history.
In the Women's 600m, Alyssa Kulesa was 4th in a personal best of 1:39.03, while Grace Nwaeme was 6th in 1:43.19. Antonella Lanuza won the 800m in 2:18.36, Kulesa finished 3rd in the 800m in 2:24.44, and Norah Sjerven was 7th in 2:39.84. Nwaeme came back on day 2 to finish 3rd in the 400m with a 58.32.
Hakeem Chinapoo ran a personal best in the 60m to finish 4th, followed by Julien Evering in 6th place in 6.94.
Za'Ryan Wilson ran 22.51 to finish 4th in the 200m, followed by Aaron Prestwich in a personal best of 22.53 in 5th, and Harel Gameti 7th in 22.79.
Ali Benzem finished 4th in the 1000m in a personal best of 2:28.03, followed in 7th by Landon Hartley in 2:30.10.
Maya Curtis ran an outstanding 3000m to finish 2nd in 10:32.88.
Taj Wilson finished 2nd in the triple jump with a 13.79m, Marciano Winn 5th in 13.29m, and Ahmed Ahmed 6th in 12.83m
Lovely Hibbert was 3rd in the women's shot put in 12.43m, Natasha Lynch 6th in 10.78m personal best, and Sharla Vitell 8th in 10.33m. In the weight throw, Lynch was 2nd in 15.64m and Hibbert 4th in a personal best of 14.98m to move to 17th in the nation.
Koen Zandvliet hit a personal best to finish 2nd in the weight throw with a 17.56m to move to 5th in the nation, followed by Brayden Schoon, who threw a personal best of 15.26m to move to 22nd.
The Women's DMR was victorious, setting the facility record in 12:32.91, and the Men's also picked up the victory in 10:41.55.
The Men's 4x400m relay of Noah Houston, Terefe Ormsby, Aaron Masenge, and Tanner Gibb ran 3:26.69 to finish 2nd.
The Reivers will look to close out the indoor season strong at the NJCAA Indoor Championships hosted by Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, March 6,7.
