Reivers Win 4th Consecutive National Title
SAN ANTONIO - For the 4th year in a row, Iowa Western Shotgun Sports came out on top of the ACUI Division 4 standings. Iowa Western defeated 2nd place Connors State College 2803 to 2723 after adding all of the final team totals from the six events.
The Reivers topped four of the six disciplines following the five-day team events. The team won Division 4 Skeet, Doubles Trap, and Sporting Clays and defeated all teams, Division One, Two, and Three included, in American Trap with a score of 497. Leo Brand and Payton Kruse shot a perfect 100 in the event, while Abby Johnson, Jack Straight, and Michael Day each ended with 99 targets broken.
Iowa Western finished 2nd in Sporting Clays and 4th in Super Sporting to round out the team events.
Individually, Johnson led all IWCC shooters with a score of 553, winning Doubles Trap and Super Sporting while finishing 3rd in Doubles Skeet. Payton Kruse added a national title in Women's American Trap while Leo Brand followed with the men's title in American Trap; Day rounded out the individual titles with a win in Men's Double Trap.
"It was a great week," emphasized Johnson, "I had nine days to keep my head down and do my job, and that's what I did. This whole team did that and I couldn't be any prouder with how far enveryone has come this year."
Out of 776 shooters, Johnson finished with the 48th highest total, earning her Women's All-American honors and 2nd team All-American honors for men and women combined. She ended the week with the 4th highest women's total (all-divisions) and highest women's total from a 2-year school. Mason Gerdes also finished his week as an All-American with a HOA score of 548.
After building the program from the ground up seven years ago, Head Coach Derek Pollock's teams have now won four consecutive national championships with 13 individual champions.
