NORTH TEXAS TABS MARSHALL TO LEAD TRACK AND FIELD PROGRAM
DENTON, Texas – The University of North Texas announced today that they have hired Doug Marshall as their 12th head coach in program history dating back to 1921. Coach Marshall spent the past four years at the helm of the Iowa Western Track & Field program and led the Reivers to their first team national championships.
"I want to thank Coach Marshall for his time at Iowa Western," said Iowa Western President Dr. Dan Kinney. "He has taken our program to the next level. We wish him well in his new position in Texas. "
A three-time USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year, Coach Marshall said, "I would like to thank our administration during my time here at Iowa Western. Four years ago, Jeremy Capo trusted me to help elevate this program to become a national contender and I am forever grateful for the opportunity. Shane Larson has been an incredible man to work for over the past year and I am blessed for his leadership."
On March 6, 2021, Iowa Western earned the programs first track and field national championship when the women's indoor team defeated South Plains (TX) by just nine points to claim the crown. The team repeated the feat the following season, clearing the field by a decisive 62 points. The women then completed the double, winning the outdoor title by 19 points over New Mexico JC. The men's team would have their highest indoor and outdoor finishes in 2022, taking third place at indoor nationals and finishing as the national runner-up after the outdoor championships. Cross Country saw team success as well, with the men's team earning a third place and a runner-up finish in 2020 and 2021.
"Coach Marshall has put his stamp on the Reiver Track and Field and Cross Country Program," mentioned Iowa Western Athletic Director Shane Larson. "His commitment during his time at Iowa Western has created one of the top Two-Year programs in the country. He has shown his ability to build a complete program and we look forward to watching him take his talents to the NCAA Division I level. We will start a national search to determine his successor immediately."
In four seasons, Coach Marshall and his staff won seven ICCAC Region XI Titles, produced 28 track & field and cross country national champions, 61 NJCAA All-Americans, 158 USTFCCCA All-Americans, five USTFCCCA NJCAA Division I Athletes of the Year, and 31 NJCAA All-Academic student-athletes.
"Iowa Western will always have an incredibly large place in my heart as I have grown so much during my time here," stated Marshall. "I want to thank my staff; they have gone over and beyond the normal duties as a coach and played a major part in what we were able to accomplish. Most of all thank you to all the incredible young men and women I have had the pleasure to work with at Iowa Western. Their selflessness and dedication to be elite in everything they do is what makes us the best JUCO program in the nation. I will miss Iowa Western so much, but I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my life at the University of North Texas."
