COUNCIL BLUFFS - NJCAA No. 25 Iowa Western Softball swept Kankakee CC, 13-5 and 9-4 in a windy doubleheader at the Dr. John & Jean Marshall Complex on Thursday afternoon.
With wind gusts up to 41 mph, the visitors struck first with three runs to lead off the game. The Reivers (19-1) answered right back with five runs, including a two-run home run from Kiana LeDoux. Freshman Ruclaireth Tovar Rodríguez added a two-run home run in the second on a frozen rope to left field to make it 7-3.
After giving up a pair of runs to the Cavaliers in the third, Iowa Western broke the game open in the bottom of the frame, adding five more runs -all unearned after three straight throwing errors- to make it 12-5. A wild pitch with Kennedy Borud standing at third base in the bottom of the 4th gave the Reivers an eight-run cushion into the top of the 5th. Payton Smith came into relieve Saydee Plummer and struck out a pair to give Iowa Western the win.
Game two saw a fantastic game from Freshman Taylin Tabor. The shortstop would go 4-4 at the plate with a double, four runs, an RBI, and three stolen bases. Tabor upped her batting average to an NJCAA-leading .651 this season, minimum 10 games played.
Iowa Western would score two runs in the first and second innings, then a run in the third and fourth, and tacked on three in the fifth. Kankakee scored three runs in the fourth, and a solo shot from Brittyn Bailey in the sixth inning. Freshman left-handed pitcher Kyla Parker went 3.2 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out a pair. Freshman Logan Brown would come in to get the final out of the inning after the score was 5-3, Reivers. She would go the rest of the way, giving up just one run to earn her first save of the season.
