COUNCIL BLUFFS - NJCAA No. 25 Iowa Western Softball defeated North Platte CC, 10-1 and 8-0, at the Dr. John and Jean Marshall Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Reivers (21-1) dominated game one from the jump, using back-to-back home runs from Lauren Black and Jaiden Burris to make it 3-0, just five batters into the game. The team added five more runs in the bottom of the third; a three-run jack over the left field scoreboard from Avyana Lindsey put the team up by eight.
Freshman Kennedy Borud added to her team-leading 10 home runs with her 11th of the season in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to left centerfield.
In the Circle, Sophomore right-handed pitcher Saydee Plummer picked up her 9th win of the season, striking out five Knight batters in three innings of work. Freshman Payton Smith finished the job, striking out four of the last six batters she faced, giving up just one unearned run.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Kyla Parker pitched a gem in game two, facing just one over the minimum and striking out five for her 7th win of the season. The Texas native worked 3.1 perfect frames before giving up a single to North Platte's Nayley Duran, but erased her on the next pitch as Heavan Hutchison grounded into the 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. A double to Alexandra Fadden to lead off the fifth was her only other blemish of the day.
Parker was backed by two runs in the second inning, and then extra-base hits from Harlee Fowler, Borud, Amelia Ehlert, and Lindsey in the third for a five-run inning.
Shortstop Taylin Tabor continues to rake this season. The Freshman from Andover, KS added four more hits to run her batting average to a nation-leading .652 and added four more stolen bases, leading the team with 19.
The Reivers are back in action on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as they'll begin with a doubleheader versus Fort Scott CC and then play four against North Dakota State College of Science, all played at the Marshall Complex on the campus of Iowa Western.
