COUNCIL BLUFFS - NJCAA No. 22 Iowa Western Softball used 26 hits and a trio of homeruns to defeat Fort Scott CC (KS) 11-2 and 7-1 at the Dr. John and Jean Marshall Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Reivers (23-1) started red-hot in game one; three straight hits at the top of the order made it quickly 2-0. The barrage continued in the second inning with the team sending 10 batters to the plate, scoring four runs on seven hits, capping off the frame with a 2-run double from Freshman Kiana LeDoux.
The Greyhounds (4-14) plated a pair of runs at the top of the second inning off of starting pitcher Saydee Plummer. Plummer (9-0) would settle down after that, going the distance, striking out four along the way.
Iowa Western tacked on a run in the third on an RBI double from Ruclaireth Tovar Rodríguez. The team added four more in the fifth with Freshman Brooke Koenigsman launching a 2-run blast over the left field wall to walk it off and end the game in five innings.
Freshman Kennedy Borud went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with a double, a hit-by-pitch, two RBI, and four runs.
In game two, the Reivers sent out Freshman left-handed pitcher Kyla Parker. Parker tossed four scoreless innings, scattering three hits to the Greyhounds to earn her eighth win of the year.
Offensively, Iowa Western scored two unearned runs in the first inning after a 2-run double from Amelia Ehlert following a botched throw from second base. Ehlert smacked her first home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning. Kamira Botos added a double, and then back-to-back RBI singles from Keinlee Rinacke and Borud, tacked on two more.
Freshman Kiana LeDoux smacked her fifth home run of the season in the bottom half of the fifth inning, and Freshman shortstop Taylin Tabor continued her 24-game hitting streak, going 2-4 with a double and a stolen base.
Tabor leads the NJCAA in batting average, hitting .636 in 87 plate appearances this season, and her 49 hits are good for 6th in the nation so far. She is also third in the country for on-base percentage at .678, with a minimum of 20 at-bats.
Iowa Western is back in action tomorrow at 1:00 pm as they begin a four-game series with North Dakota State College of Science at the Marshall Complex on the campus of Iowa Western.
All home games can be streamed for FREE on the Reiver Sports Network.
